The Growing of the WSEAS has caused envy of other conferences organizers. Particularly, those that their "academic" (=economic) interests are touched on! So, another colleague which has another "society" sent several emails to all the committee members of the WSEAS Conferences in the University of Cambridge encouraging them to resign from the Scientific Committee! He did not hesitate to send these email with his bogus information to Professor Zadeh!! See the names and the emails of the Committee here: [www.wseas.org] This "colleague" that is also conference organizer, sent emails blaming the WSEAS and add also slanderous comments about the WSEAS in some blogs (always anonymous) misleading sometimes the owners of the blogs! However, nothing remains hidden, we received his emails (toghether with the committee: [www.wseas.org] ) and examining the headings (i.e. the source code) of his emails, we identified him. This is the really "bogus" professor who creates bogus emails and bogus conferences (if we would like to use his own terminology). This is the really "bogus" professor that spoke very badly for WSEAS and Professor Zadeh. Nothing more than a disgusting, revolting, moron "competition" of another conference organizer. This was the reply of Professor Lotfi Zadeh: Dear Professor Mastorakis We received his emails also, do not worry! You deserve compliments and congratulations on your making WSEAS an important international forum for exchange of information and ideas. With cordial regards. Sincerely, Lotfi Zadeh-- Lotfi A. This was the reply of Professor Zadeh for this "colleague" that sent these stupid email to us, posted some comments in some blogs etc... Dear friends and dear visitors of this web page, if you want to learn his name, send me an email: mastor@wseas.org Poor collegue, with your bogus emails and bogus postings, you do not gain anything by these foolish and childy actions. If you want to have decent conferences like those of WSEAS you must a) has proceedings and book in ISI / SCI (Web of Science). Download them now from the site of ISI . As you can see from the site of ISI the criteria for including Books and Proceedings in ISI are very strict and most of the conferences of older societies are not in the ISI Index while all the WSEAS books and proceedings are inside ISI / SCI (Web of Science). Check it on the site of ISI please, now. Letter of March 10, 2009 or old letters in [www.wseas.us] . I do not know and I am not sure about your conferences. Maybe, in the future you will savor the joy of success. But now, not. Be careful! We do not want to tell you your name on the web right now, but if you insist we will do it.
b) You must organize Conferences like the WSEAS. The WSEAS are always sponsored and organized by Universities . The Universities are also re-sponsible for the REVIEW of the Papers as well as for the final technical program. Most of the following unive-rsities have sponsored and organized more than one WSEAS conference , like Harvard, MIT and University of Cambridge. Click here for more Universities that host and sponsor WSEAS events and are responsible for the review: [www.worldses.org] c) You must increase the rejection rates of your conferences like the WSEAS!
d) You must have famous speakers, exactly like the WSEAS, [www.wseas.org]
and many-many other things (discover them ...) Dear friends and dear visitors of this web page, if you want to learn his name, send me an email: mastor@wseas.orgSee also the reply of Professor Rao Kamisetty From: "Rao, Kamisetty R" rao@uta.edu> To: "Prof. Nikos E. Yes! Read this story The software awards scamPublished 16 August 2007 Tags: WSEASTags: SoftareTags: ConferenceTags: ConferencesTags: BogusTags: JunkTags: FakeTags: Fraud Tags: ScamTags: spam I put out a new product a couple of weeks ago. This new product has so far won 16 different awards and recommendations from software download sites. Some of them even emailed me messages of encouragement such as “Great job, we’re really impressed!”. I should be delighted at this recognition of the quality of my software, except that the ’software’ doesn’t even run. This is hardly surprising when you consider that it is just a text file with the words “this program does nothing at all” repeated a few times and then renamed as an .exe. The PAD file that described the software contains the description “This program does nothing at all”. The screenshot I submitted (below) was similarly blunt and to the point: Even the name of the software, “awardmestars”, was a bit of a giveaway. And yet it still won 16 ‘awards’. Here they are: Some of them look quite impressive, but none of them are worth the electrons it takes to display them. The obvious explanation is that some download sites give an award to every piece of software submitted to them. In return they hope that the author will display the award with a link back to them. The back link then potentially increases traffic to their site directly (through clicks on the award link) and indirectly (through improved page rank from the incoming links). The author gets some awards to impress their potential clients and the download site gets additional traffic. This practise is blatantly misleading and dishonest. It makes no distinction between high quality software and any old rubbish that someone was prepared to submit to a download site. The download sites that practise this deceit should be ashamed of themselves. Similarly, any author or company, that displays one of these ‘awards’ is either being naive (at best) or knowingly colluding in the scam (at worst). My suspicions were first aroused by the number of five star awards I received for my PerfectTablePlan software. When I went to these sites all the other programs on them seemed to have five star awards as well. I also noticed that some of my weaker competitors were proudly displaying pages full of five star awards. I saw very few three or four star awards. Something smelled fishy. Being a scientist by original training, I decided to run a little experiment to see if a completely worthless piece of software would win any awards. Having seen various recommendations for the rundenko.com submit-everywhere.com submission service on the ASP forums I emailed the owner, Mykola Rudenko, to ask if he could help with my little experiment. To my surprise, he generously agreed to help by submitting “awardmestars” to all 1033 sites on their database, free of charge. According to the report I received 2 weeks after submissions began “awardmestars” is now listed on 218 sites, pending on 394 sites and has been rejected by 421 sites. Approximately 7% of the sites that listed the software emailed me that it had won an award (I don’t know how many have displayed it with an award, without informing me). With 394 pending sites it might win quite a few more awards yet. Many of the rejections were on the grounds of “The site does not accept products of this genre” (it was listed as a utility) rather than quality grounds. The truth is that many download sites are just electronic dung heaps, using fake awards, dubious SEO and content misappropriated from PAD files in a pathetic attempt to make a few dollars from Google Adwords. Hopefully these bottom-feeders will be put out of business by the continually improving search engines, leaving only the better sites. I think there is still a role for good quality download sites. But there needs to be more emphasis on quality, classification, and additional content (e.g. reviews). Whether it is possible for such a business to be profitable, I don’t know. However, it seems to work in the MacOSX world where the download sites are much fewer in number, but with much higher quality and more user interaction. Some download site owners did email me to say either “very funny” or “stop wasting my time”. Kudos to them for taking the time to check every submission. I recommend you put their sites high on your list next time you are looking for software: www.filecart.com www.freshmeat.net www.download-tipp.de (German) This is the response I got from Lothar Jung of download-tipp.de when I showed him a draft of this article: “The other side for me as a website publisher is that if you do not give each software 5 stars, you don’t get so many back links and some authors are not very pleased with this and your website. When I started download-tipp.de, I wanted to create a site where users can find good software. So I decided the visitor is important, and not the number of backlinks. Only 10% of all programs submitted get the 5 Suns Award.” Another important issue for download sites is trust. I want to know that the software I am downloading doesn’t contain spyware, trojans or other malware. Some of the download sites have cunningly exploited this by awarding “100% clean” logos. I currently use the Softpedia one on the PerfectTablePlan download page. It shouldn’t be too difficult in principal to scan software for known malware. But now I am beginning to wonder if these 100% clean logos have any more substance than the “five star”awards. The only way to find out for sure would be to submit a download with malware, which would be unethical. If anyone has any information about whether these sites really check for malware, I would be interested to know. My thanks to submit-everywhere.com for making this experiment possible. I was favourably impressed by the thoroughness of their service. At only $70 I think it is excellent value compared to the time and hassle of trying to do it yourself. I expect to be a paying customer in future. ** Addendum 1 **
This little experiment has been featured on reddit.com, digg.com, slashdot.com, stumbleupon.com and a number of other popular sites and blogs. Consequently there have been hundreds of comments on this blog and on other sites. I am very flattered by the interest. But I also feel like Dr Frankenstein, looking on as my experiment gains a life of its own. If I had known the article was going to be read by so many people I would have taken a bit more time to clarify the following points: - I have no commercial interest in, or prior relationship with, the three download sites mentioned. I singled them out because I infer from emails received that they have a human-in-the-loop, checking all submissions (or a script that passes the Turing test, which is even more praiseworthy). I offered all three a chance to be quoted in the article. Today I received a similar email from tucows.com, but they were too late to make the article. I don’t know if they read the article before they emailed me.
- I have no commercial interest in, or prior relationship with, the automatic submission service mentioned. I approached them for help, which they generously provided, free of charge.
- The only business mentioned in which I have a commercial interest is my own table planning software, PerfectTablePlan.
January 2008 First off, Bogus to me is not a matter of quality There are Replicating a fiction (bogusity) | Editor's Introduction -- The writers of many biology books like to tell about Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck, but their Lamarck is an invention. He has acquired his characteristics from hearsay and wrong guesses, and he has been replicated in successive generations of schoolbooks by successive teams of plagiarists. | from The Textbook Letter, September-October 1994 The Imaginary Lamarck: A Look at Bogus "History" in Schoolbooks and also in some biological conference Michael T. Ghiselin (bogusity)Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck (1744-1829) takes a prominent place in many biology textbooks and life-science textbooks, which depict him as the author of a "theory" of evolution based upon the inheritance of acquired characteristics. Lamarck's views, these books say, should be rejected in favor of the theory of evolution by natural selection, propounded by Charles Darwin (1809-1882), because only Darwin's theory is compatible with the findings of 20th-century genetics. The Lamarck presented in schoolbooks, however, is a fiction -- an imaginary figure who has been fashioned from hearsay and wrong guesses, and who has been replicated in countless books by successive teams of plagiarists. This figure shares very little, except his name, with the Lamarck of history. Textbook-writers have imbued the fictitious Lamarck with an importance that the real Lamarck never had, and they have credited him with ideas that the real Lamarck did not hold. They also have invented a myth in which those ideas are compared falsely with Darwin's ideas, to produce a bogus dichotomy. Textbooks typically introduce Lamarck with a flourish, as in this passage from Prentice Hall's Biology: The Study of Life: One of the first theories of evolution was presented by the French biologist Jean Baptiste de Lamarck in 1809. From his studies of animals, Lamarck became convinced that species were not constant. Instead, he believed that they evolved from preexisting species. . . . According to Lamarck's theory, evolution involved two principles. He called his first principle the law of use and disuse. . . . The second part of Lamarck's theory was the inheritance of acquired characteristics. Lamarck assumed that the characteristics an organism developed through use and disuse could be passed on to its offspring. Much the same material appears in Holt's Biology Today: (you will see also some conference on the web) In 1809 a French biologist named Jean Baptiste de Lamarck presented an explanation of the origin of species in his work Zoological Philosophy. Lamarck developed a theory of evolution based on his belief in two biological processes: - The use and disuse of organs. According to Lamarck, organisms respond to changes in their environment by developing new organs or changing the structure and function of old organs. . . .
- Inheritance of acquired traits. Lamarck believed that acquired characteristics were passed on to the organism's offspring. . . . (can we run a conference?)
Such claims give many false or misleading impressions, starting with the implication that Lamarck's views were original. They were not. Lamarck did not originate the idea of organic evolution (a concept that dates from ancient times), did not originate any ideas to explain why evolution happens, and did not originate the doctrine that acquired characteristics could be inherited. That doctrine, the one with which Lamarck's name is most famously associated, had been widely accepted since antiquity and was taken for granted by most 19th-century biologists. While schoolbooks suggest that Lamarck was an eminent figure in the history of science, he actually had only a small following among the scientists of his day. Furthermore, this following arose largely by default: For anyone who accepted that organic evolution really went on in nature, the only theoretical framework for explaining it lay in the views that Lamarck absorbed and publicized. And one reason why the concept of evolution was not broadly accepted was that Lamarck's views were implausible. Charles Lyell (1797-1875), in his exceedingly influential book Principles of Geology, used that implausibility to discredit the idea of evolution itself. Lamarck's notions about evolution appeared in his book Philosophie Zoologique, which presented little (if any) scientific evidence -- either for the hypothesis that evolution had occurred or for the particular explanatory ideas that Lamarck favored. Lamarck's style, left over from an earlier generation, was heavy on speculation but weak on fact. Indeed, what he set forth was generally regarded as philosophy, not science. Imagining a mysterious "tendency to perfection," Lamarck declared that simple animals arose spontaneously and then became more complex, evolving in the direction of man. They deviated somewhat from this evolutionary path, however, because they had to adapt to their surroundings and their conditions of existence. As the animals strove to satisfy their daily needs, the movement of their internal fluids caused parts of their bodies to swell, Lamarck said, and these changes were passed to the animals' offspring. Lamarck's notion of organisms changing progressively from simple to complex suggested the sort of goal-seeking that might have appealed to a person who had a theological bent. Lamarck, however, tried to explain everything in strictly materialistic terms, with body fluids acting in ways that were vaguely analogous to the movement of air in the atmosphere or the movement of water within the earth. Even this short summary of the ideas in Philosophie Zoologique suffices to show that Lamarck's approach to evolution was that of a metaphysician rather than a natural scientist. It invoked a mystical assumption (the notion that organisms sought "perfection" and tended to become increasingly complex and man-like) which could not be treated scientifically and could not be supported or contravened by evidence. For that very reason, Lamarck's construct was not a proper theory and was not at all comparable to the theory that Darwin would later present in On the Origin of Species. Darwin's concept was a well articulated body of scientific thought that could be, and was, tested by recourse to facts. Lamarck's was not. Lamarck's idea about giraffes -- that their necks grew longer as they stretched for distant leaves, and that their elongated necks were inherited by their offspring -- has been cited and illustrated in one schoolbook after another, to the point of utter tedium. A passage about giraffes really does occur in Lamarck's writings, but the schoolbook-writers obviously have not looked at it. Instead they have seized upon an addled version of the giraffe scenario, and they have been recycling that version for decades. They present it in a highly misleading way, and they don't tell that the giraffe scenario is merely a hypothetical example of how a Lamarckian "mechanism" might work -- not an example of something that has actually been studied scientifically. They also fail to tell that Lamarck's notion about giraffes, like all his evolutionary speculations, involved the mystical principle of progress toward "perfection." All of these misrepresentations of Lamarck form part of a bigger folly: Textbooks pit Lamarck against Darwin in a mythical contest from which Darwin emerges victorious. To perpetuate that myth, the textbook-writers lead students to believe that Lamarck embraced the inheritance of acquired characteristics, that Darwin rejected it, and that this was the crucial difference between the two men's ideas about evolution. None of that is true. First, Lamarck adopted the inheritance of acquired characteristics as an assumption; he needed that assumption to make some of his imagined mechanisms work, but it was an assumption about heredity, not about evolution. Second, Darwin accepted the inheritance of acquired characteristics, just as Lamarck did, and Darwin even thought that there was some experimental evidence to support it. In a book published in 1868, The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication, Darwin presented the "pangenesis" hypothesis to explain how the inheritance of acquired characteristics might operate: All the parts of an organism's body threw off little corpuscles that were collected in the organism's reproductive system and then were passed on to the organism's offspring. (This idea did not originate with Darwin; similar concepts had been published before.) The tale told in most schoolbooks is all the more misleading because it isolates Darwin from Lamarck, as if there were no historical or intellectual connection between them. That too is false. Darwin was thoroughly familiar with Lamarck's views and writings, and Darwin explicitly acknowledged them when he composed an outline of the development of ideas about evolution. The outline was added to the third edition of On the Origin of Species (published in 1861) and was titled "An Historical Sketch of the Progress of Opinion on the Origin of Species." Here is what it said of Lamarck: Lamarck was the first man whose conclusions [concerning the origin of species] excited much attention. This justly-celebrated naturalist first published his views in 1801, and he much enlarged them in 1809 in his "Philosophie Zoologique," and subsequently, in 1815, in his Introduction to his "Hist. Nat. des Animaux sans Vertébres." In these works he upholds the doctrine that species, including man, are descended from other species. He first did the eminent service of arousing attention to the probability of all change in the organic, as well as in the inorganic world, being the result of law, and not of miraculous interposition. Lamarck seems to have been chiefly led to his conclusion on the gradual change of species, by the difficulty of distinguishing species and varieties, by the almost perfect gradation of forms in certain organic groups, and by the analogy of domestic productions. With respect to the means of modification, he attributed something to the direct action of the physical conditions of life, something to the crossing of already existing forms, and much to use and disuse, that is, to the effects of habit. To this latter agency he seemed to attribute all the beautiful adaptations in nature; -- such as the long neck of the giraffe for browsing on the branches of trees. But he likewise believed in a law of progressive development; and as all the forms of life thus tend to progress, in order to account for the existence at the present day of very simple productions, he maintains that such forms were now spontaneously generated. Tails of Mice, Ears of DogsMore confusion is sown when schoolbooks purport to explain why the mythical contest between Lamarck and Darwin was decided in Darwin's favor. Here the textbook-writers tell fictitious stories about "tests" that supposedly have refuted Lamarck's "theory." In reality, those "tests" have been directed not at Lamarck's particular claims but at the idea of the inheritance of acquired characteristics -- an idea that, as I have said, was held by Lamarck and Darwin alike, and by most of their scientific contemporaries. One such "test" that has been mindlessly cited in many textbooks is an exercise carried out by the biologist August Weismann (1834-1914). Here is how it is described in the high-school book Addison-Wesley Biology, under the headline "Lamarck Disproven": In 1889, German biologist August Weismann showed that Lamarck's [explanation of evolution] was incorrect. Weismann cut off the tails of hundreds of mice for 22 generations. Lamarck's hypothesis [sic] would predict that eventually mice would be born with shorter tails or no tails at all. However, Weismann's mice continued to produce baby mice with normal tails. Weismann concluded that changes in the body during an individual's lifetime do not affect the reproductive cells or the offspring. That story combines false "history" with a fundamental misconception. The acquired characteristics that figured in Lamarck's thinking were changes that resulted from an individual's own drives and actions, not from the actions of external agents. Lamarck was not concerned with wounds, injuries or mutilations, and nothing that Lamarck had set forth was tested or "disproven" by the Weismann tail-chopping experiment. The truth about Weismann's work is much more interesting than the story told in schoolbooks. Weismann questioned whether the inheritance of acquired characteristics could take place at all, and he devised many ingenious arguments against it. These arguments, however, did not involve the negative results of his tail-chopping experiment. Weismann himself didn't consider such results to have much weight, and he knew that the experiment had not disclosed anything new: Experience with circumcision in humans (and with other kinds of ceremonial or cosmetic mutilation) had already shown that repeated surgery, through many successive generations, did not cause an inherited change in an organ's form. Despite this, textbook-writers continue to promote the notion that Lamarck's view of evolution can be refuted by experiments involving mutilation. As an alternative to the bogus story about mice, some books tell a bogus story about dogs, complete with pictures to suggest that something important is being taught. Heath's Biological Science: A Molecular Approach, for example, shows pictures of an adult Doberman pinscher and a Doberman pup, with this caption: Acquired characteristics are not inherited as Lamarck thought. Even though this adult Doberman has had its tail and ears cropped, you can see that its offspring still was born with long ears and tail. The same pictures, with a similarly misconceived caption, appear in Kendall/Hunt's Biological Science: An Ecological Approach. In Prentice Hall's Biology, the two dogs are in a single picture, but the false lesson is the same. The caption says: The ears of this adult Doberman pinscher have been clipped so that they stand up on her head. But the ears of her puppy still hang down by the side of its head. This is proof that traits acquired during a lifetime are not passed on to the next generation. Like the story of Weismann's mice, these notions about dogs have nothing to do with Lamarck, with Lamarck's thoughts about evolution, or with Lamarck's conception of the inheritance of acquired characteristics. As I already have explained, Lamarck was not concerned with features arising from wounds. Though one schoolbook after another recites irrelevant stories about the tails of mice or the ears of dogs, what really led scientists to reject the inheritance of acquired characteristics was the expanding body of knowledge about cell biology. Given all that we now know about cells and chromosomes, it is very hard to imagine how the hereditary material can be affected by changes in other components of an organism's body. Factions and FantasiesTextbooks perpetuate all these follies so that they can perpetuate a bogus dichotomy between Lamarck's views and Darwin's. But why? And where did the notion of a dichotomy come from in the first place? It seems that schoolbook-writers have perceived the history of evolutionary thought in a badly muddled way and have been confused by terminology. To understand this, we have to look at what happened after Darwin published On the Origin of Species. When Darwin's theory of evolution became widely known, it made evolution a matter for serious scientific discourse. It also focused attention on the principle of natural selection, which a lot of people did not like. Some of the people were French, and their attitudes were colored by chauvinism. They wanted an explanatory principle devised by a Frenchman. Others rejected natural selection because they did not like the relentlessly competitive world that selection implied and that Darwin envisioned. They wanted something that would be more in keeping with their personal, beneficent political values. For these and other reasons, people espoused various alternatives to natural selection, and a number of factions were formed. By the beginning of the 1900s, two of the factions had gained major importance and were dominating the debate about evolution. One faction comprised people who favored natural selection as the chief mechanism of evolution, and who rejected the inheritance of acquired characteristics; these people came to be called "Neo-Darwinians." The other group advocated a wide variety of evolutionary mechanisms (known or unknown), and they also accepted the premise that acquired traits could pass from one generation to the next; these people were called "Neo-Lamarckians." The controversy between the two groups endured for several decades, but by 1940 biologists had learned so much about genetics and related subjects that the ideas of the "Neo-Lamarckians" were generally abandoned. They play no role in our modern theory of evolution, which emerged during the 1940s and the early 1950s. These historical developments -- and especially the names of the two factions that disputed with each other during the early 1900s -- probably explain why textbooks have got things so wrong. It is easy to see how mere terminology could have led an uninformed textbook-writer into error: Upon hearing that there was a controversy between "Neo-Lamarckians" and "Neo-Darwinians," the writer evidently inferred that Lamarck and Darwin themselves must have been opponents, and that their ideas about evolution must have been utterly different; the writer then invented a tale based on his false inferences, and he put his tale into a schoolbook many years ago. Ever since then, textbook-company plagiarists have been copying and recopying it, so students and teachers have been stuck with it. Worse still, the tale has acquired fictitious embellishments and "improvements" that render it even more misleading. For example, Addison-Wesley Biology says this: While studying fossils of extinct invertebrates, Lamarck found some that looked like primitive forms of modern animals. He reasoned that these could be the ancestors of some of the invertebrates alive today. That may sound like a plausible explanation of why Lamarck was interested in evolution, but it is really a guess. It is not an accurate description of what happened. According to Lamarck's own writings, his research into fossils led him to the idea that each group of animals seemed to blend into another, so that all groups could presumably be arranged in a great, continuous series -- with no abrupt breaks -- if enough specimens could be collected. Schoolbook-writers may find it pleasing to imagine that Lamarck viewed a series of fossils as a series of ancestors and descendants, but he did not. Darwin is abused in much the same way. Darwin's recognition of evolution was based on evidence supplied by biogeography, not by the fossil record; in other words, it was based on the distribution of organisms in space, not on their distribution in time. The peculiar organisms of islands and of isolated places like Australia provided the crucial evidence, and it was Darwin's brilliant analysis of biogeographic phenomena that convinced his fellow scientists that he was right. All of that is straightforward history, but some textbook-writers prefer to tell a story in which Darwin acquires his understanding of evolution while he is contemplating fossils; in this story, biogeography and Darwin's biogeographic observations are not even mentioned. From such misinformation -- about Lamarck, Darwin and all the rest of it -- is fabricated the bogus scientific "history" found in our schoolbooks. Michael T. Ghiselin is a biologist, a senior research fellow at the California Academy of Sciences, and chairman of the Academy's Center for the History and Philosophy of Science. His research has emphasized comparative anatomy and the evolution of modes of reproduction. His books include The Triumph of the Darwinian Method and The Economy of Nature and the Evolution of Sex. return to top

Yes! Read this story The software awards scamPublished 16 August 2007 Tags: WSEASTags: SoftareTags: ConferenceTags: ConferencesTags: BogusTags: JunkTags: FakeTags: FraudTags: ScamTags: spam I put out a new product a couple of weeks ago.

Lamarck's views, these books say, should be rejected in favor of the theory of evolution by natural selection, propounded by Charles Darwin (1809-1882), because only Darwin's theory is compatible with the findings of 20th-century genetics.

ANOTHER ACADEMIC FRAUD?
** Addendum 2 ** 23 awards ‘won’ at the latest count. OTHER LINKS: [www.wseas.org] [wseas-cscc.blogspot.com] [wseas-cscc.blogspot.com] [sfaka.blogspot.com] [ethnika.blogspot.com] [sfaka.blogspot.com] [womac.wordpress.com] [womac.wordpress.com] [creation-and-evolution.blogspot.com] Περισσότερα... »

We visited last Sunday the well known Attica Zoological Park First Question: ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY: [environmentalpolicy.blogspot.com] Second Question After visiting the department with Monkeys we started a discussion about Darwin's Theory (Evolution). A good colleague from another Military University of Greece (Hellenic Airforce Academy) had many objections about the Evolutionary Theory and sent me later a very interesting email. It seems that the controversy still exists and there is no a common point of Scientists yet. Many WSEAS Members are Biologists, however all of us have our personal opinions maybe from our families and under the influence of our religions. I have told in a previous WSEAS Conference on Evolutionary Computing (Lisbon, 2005) that maybe God uses Evolutionary Computing like an Engineer and so probably there is not a real contradiction between Creation and Evolution. It seems that a common point could be an Intelligent Design. As you can see our discussion cannot be only scientific, but it must combines personal faith, experiences outside science (religion? miracle? experience?). The WSEAS Community includes people from all the religions. Many of them are religious persons. We want to have your opinions. To this end, we created a Forum (i.e. Blog) with several videos that we found from www.youtube.com [creation-and-evolution.blogspot.com] If you are interested to participate in this dialogue ("debate") you can post your opinions, articles, etc [creation-and-evolution.blogspot.com] CLICK ON THE LINK: Post a Comment [creation-and-evolution.blogspot.com] If your comments are good enough, you will be invited to publish them in a more official WSEAS forum (Book, Journal, Educational CD-ROM, etc....) Any WSEAS Member or friend or any simple visitor of this page can tell his opinion. The best contributions (not anonymous please) from our Academic Community will be invited to be Chapters in a Book or Papers in a Journal os Magazine or Educational CD-ROM that will be published by WSEAS. All the opinions towards to one or to the other direction are encouraged. Forward this link to your friends and students. We need both popular and scientific contributions. See: http://www.worldses.org/feedback.htm and [www.wseas.org]
INDEXING WSEAS has already ensured the inclusion of all the volumes of the Proceedings in all the collaborating WSEAS Citation Indices, like ISI, INSPEC (IEE), Engineering Information (EI), SCOPUS, Elsevier and the various Elsevier Bibliographic Databases, CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts), ZENTRALBLATT, ULRICH, MATHSCINET of AMS (American Mathematical Society), MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS of AMS (American Mathematical Society), DPP (Directory of Published Proceedings), Computer Science Bibliography Administrator, American Chemical Society, DEST, EBSCO etc.... [www.worldses.org] For example, the IEE (now it is called IET) has in its citation index (INSPEC) more than 7000 papers from WSEAS, only for the last 3 years. Visit, now: [www.worldses.org]
UNIVERSITIES WHERE THE WSEAS ORGANIZES CONFERENCES: See www.wseas.org
REJECTION RATES IN CONFERENCES: TYPICAL EXAMPLE: The WSEAS Conference in the University of Cambridge (February 2008) has already received more than 800 papers. From these papers, after a strict review we have selected 377 for the publication.
RATES OF REJECTION IN JOURNALS: You can find the reviewers that WSEAS uses at the page [www.worldses.org] The POSITIVE OPINION OF 3 INDEPENDENT REFVIEWERS is necessary. Example: http://tinyurl.com/2q6vnr or via the official web page of WSEAS.
OTHER FEATURES 1) A very strong and important feature is that the WSEAS will give to the partipants a new username and password WITHOUT EXPIRY DATE for on-line access in the WSEAS Conference proceedings FOR EVER.
2) Several University Faculty Members and Senior Researchers that will be with us in the Conference create groups and committees for the other WSEAS events
3) Rich cultural and social part as usual. The importance of these conferences can be also proved by the impact of these conferences in 2007 and 2008: See, please [www.wseas.org]
4) The conference Books and Conference CD-ROM published by WSEAS Press continue to sell for a long time after the meeting has taken place. This is another demonstration of the prestige the scientific community attribute to the meetings organised by the WSEAS.R FEATURES:
PUBLICITY: In the WSEAS Conferences the accepted papers are published (1) Books (All these books participate in ISI, IEE, ELSEVIER, SCOPUS etc..., see the list in above) with ISBN and ISSN http://www.worldses.org/books/index.html
(2) CD-ROM Proceedings with page numbering as the books with ISBN and ISSN
(3) E-Library (Web Publishing): [www.wseas.org] with Free Access for many collaborating Universities (some of them are among the 50 first universities on the world) and Free access to all the WSEAS members and friends
****(4) Extended versions of accepted papers after further additional strict review can be published in a WSEAS Journals (The WSEAS Journals participate in the most important citation indices [www.worldses.org] like Elsevier, Scopus, EI, Compendex, INSPEC, CSA .... see: www.worldses.org/indexes )

How much "anonymous" are the anonymous? The "anonymous" are not anonymous at all, because we have their IP address already
In fact, he is a "well-known" person for the WSEAS.
This person is a Professor (unfortunately) and Director (what a pity) of another "Organization" sending us annoying and aggressive emails threatening the WSEAS Headquarters and Several WSEAS Collaborators us from time to time. Last year, he made the mistake to send an email to all the Members of the WSEAS Committee in Cambridge. More than 20 people received his email and of course they discovered his IP address and his real identity. The same well known "unknown" also posts accusations against other organizations ... IASTED, IEEE, IEE, etc... (Oh! God!).
We will not add more, but I can say his identity to our WSEAS members and WSEAS friends as well as to anybody that will send us email to wseas-team (AT) wseas.org with WSEAS in the Subject of course or by phone: 00306973743524 He also uploaded his comments in a blog, but the blog owner gave us his email and his real IP address. He has sent us several the same jackaserries by email. The WSEAS Abuse Team has saved these emails retrieving the IP address and comparing it with the IP addresses of his various companies and his numerous public and private web sites! Comparing these IP addresses we identified this "anonymous" person.
We hope that he will stop. So will not enforce us to reveal his real identity as well as to take legal measures inside his country against him. If anybody doubts, he can contact us by phone or by email. Our Best Answer for this anonymous slanderer might be:
NUMBER OF OUR PARTICIPANTS: 3000 academicians attend every year the WSEAS Conferences and more than 3000 papers are published by WSEAS each year out of more than 10000 submitted papers. Actually, from 10000 papers in WSEAS Conferences, approximately 4000 are approved and from them around 3000 thousand make registration and attend the congresses. We have here the relevant records.
WHAT DO OUR PARTICIPANTS SAY FOR THE WSEAS? You must read the real comments with their names and with their emails [www.worldses.org] These are the real comments and not the bogus comments from bogus professors anonymously (lackily we have the IPs though) on the pseudo-blogs
HIGH READABILITY. E-LIBRARY OPEN FOR ALL: THE WSEAS E-LIBRARY with more than 40000 Visits per month is OPEN for all our members and we allow the scanning from the search engines (google, etc....) QUALITY OF OUR PARTICIPANTS: Just to report a few names of our participants in the Recent WSEAS events: Lotfi Zadeh, Dimitri Bertsekas, Sunil Das, Bimal K. You can find it [tinyurl.com] or via the official web page of WSEAS. The information and the data are UNANSWERABLE, because we report the names and the titles of the papers that were accepted in a WSEAS Journal after submission of about 200 papers to Prof. Demiralp (Editor-in-Chief in WSEAS Transactions on Mathematics only 6 were promoted to the Journal) This is the information that you must have in order to stop the slanderous "anonymous" (non anonymous at all) comments in this blog: For more details contact Prof. Demiralp, Prof. Dr. METIN DEMIRALP Full Member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences also with the Informatics Institute, Istanbul Technical University, TURKEY [kullanici.be.itu.edu.tr] Editor-in-Chief of WSEAS Transactions on Mathematics [www.worldses.org] Chairman of the WSEAS Conferences AEE'07, MINO'07 and ACMOS'07 in Istanbul This is or see it directly: [tinyurl.com] Dear WSEAS Academic Community, ======================================= Additionaly to our previous email, we would like to promote you the email below (from Prof. Demiralp) which will be very important for you, because many of you had sent papers to his conferences in Istanbul Only papers that were received acceptance for 3 over 3 reviewers plus the positive opinion of Professor Demiralp] were promoted after review on the extended and enhanced version (more than 40% new material than the conference version) (Algorithm: 2 positive opinions and 1 negative opinion implies rejection, 2 positive opinions means that we must wait for the 3rd For more details, contact Prof. Demiralp demiralp@be.itu.edu.tr , see also below Acceptance Rate = 6/200 = 0.03 In the next days, all the WSEAS Editor-in-Chiefs will give us the acceptance ratio for 2007 that will be approximately similar to that of Prof. Demiralp Their emails and telephones can be given to you if you doubt of course. Original Message From: "Metin Demiralp" To: "Prof. Dr. Nikos Mastorakis" ; "Prof. Dr. Nikos E. Mastorakis" Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2007 4:32 AM Subject: WSEAS (Istanbul Manuscripts) Dear Prof. Mastorakis Tonight I have not slept, hence, possibly I may be absent minded. I present the decisions and explanations about Istanbul manuscripts. After this e-mail, I am going to send manuscripts' PDF files. Last evening I urged all referees by phone and I re- ceived their opinions. As I said on the phone, zimedecisions were sent to me and now it is complete. I also get together Review Committee members (I, Baki, Alper and three more scientists. After that I prepared the following lines. There were 33 submitted manuscripts (selected after the conference out of 200 papers from the WSEAS Conference in Istanbul), only 6 of them have been accepted. You can see the recent status in the following lines. They are marked by stars. I will send PDF files of the manuscripts in separate mails becuase of their sizes. This afternoon or evening I will write more e-mail. Please do inform me if you need something to be done by me. Best Regards. d) FROM: Nikos Mastorakis: We visited last Sunday the well known Attica Zoological Park http://www.atticapark.com/main_en.htm and visiting the department with Monkeys we started a discussion about Darwin's Theory (Evolution). Blog) with several videos that we found from www.youtube.com

The best contributions (not anonymous please) from our Academic Community will be invited to be Chapters in a Book or Papers in a Journal os Magazine or Educational CD-ROM that will be published by WSEAS. All the opinions towards to one or to the other direction are encouraged.

I am pleased to say that my experience with WSEAS has been highly positive. I have also seen many stalwarts like Lotfi Zadeh, Bimal K. Bose, Rao Kamissety, Ronald Yager, Narsingh Deo at WSEAS conferences. As the Chairman of the WSEAS Grid Computing group, I have found that many eminent persons in the area are members of the group. I have myself reviewed papers for WSEAS and I have seen that the review process is quite fair and thorough. I have also found that the conferences provide a very convivial and friendly environment. As such I would say that the academicians should embrace WSEAS conferences and journals for publishing their research work. [write WSEAS in the Subject, when you reply] FROM: Nikos Mastorakis: We visited last Sunday the well known Attica Zoological Park [www.atticapark.com] and visiting the department with Monkeys we started a discussion about Darwin's Theory (Evolution). Blog) with several videos that we found from www.youtube.com

Dear Friends See also this”: Claimed Discovery of Atlantis Called 'Completely Bogus' By Robert Roy Britt, LiveScience Senior Writer posted: 15 November 2004 09:44 am ET An amateur explorer claimed this weekend to have found the legendary lost city of Atlantis, but other researchers said there is a total lack of evidence and called the whole expedition a hoax. American architect Robert Sarmast said sonar scanning 50 miles southeast of Cyprus, in the Mediterranean, revealed walls and trenches he claims must be of the ancient city that legend refers to as a utopia. "It is a miracle we found these walls as their location and lengths match exactly the description of the acropolis of Atlantis provided by Plato in his writings," Sarmast said. The claim was reported by the Associated Press and other wire services and carried by major media outlets around the world. It is not the first time someone claimed to find the lost city. "This latest theory should be taken with a very large pinch of salt," said Despo Pilides, an archaeologist at the Department of Antiquities in Cyprus. "Archaeologists only work with hard evidence. There is no evidence whatsoever to give credence to this hypothesis and we have no intention of investigating it." Realm of fantasy Atlantis was said by Plato to be an island in the "western sea," which others have interpreted to be the Atlantic Ocean. An earthquake submerged it, the story goes. Some researchers have said Atlantis may have been in the Mediterranean. Most historians, however, consider Atlantis to be a legend, something Plato meant only as an allegory. In The Daily Telegraph of London, Pilides said "serious archaeologists tend to place the search for Atlantis within the realm of fantasy." Other experts were similarly skeptical. "More proof is necessary," Pavlos Flourentzos, the chief government archaeologist of Cyprus, told the Associated Press. Sarmast's six-day, privately funded expedition cost about $200,000. It comes about a year after he originally proposed his theory and predicted he would make the discovery. Part of the funding came from the Cypriot Tourist Organization. Sarmast published a book about the project last year. "We cannot yet provide tangible proof in the form of bricks and mortar, as the artifacts are still buried under several meters of sediment," Sarmast said in a statement. "But the circumstantial and other evidence is now irrefutable - and we hope that future expeditions will be able to uncover the sediment and bring back physical proof." 'Completely bogus' But Sarmast's "selective interpretation is nothing more than the blinkered reading of very ambiguous and unconvincing images," says Benny Peiser, a social anthropologist at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK. "Anyone with a critical eye can pick out that these images are far too vague and uncertain to be regarded as compelling evidence for any manmade structures. Today, Peiser criticized the mass media for running stories about the claimed discovery without much critical review. He moderates an electronic newsletter called CCNet that focuses on disasters and the effects on humans and society. "The very foundation on which the hoax is based is completely bogus," Peiser wrote today. "According his theory, Mr. Sarmast claims that the Mediterranean basin was 'flooded in a deluge around 9,000 BC which submerged a rectangular land mass' he believes was Atlantis. The problem is: there is no evidence whatsoever for any large-scale flooding of the Mediterranean basin at that time." Peiser notes that Atlantis has been found many times before. "It the past, Atlantis discoveries used to be treated with a high degree of skepticism and essentially left to the fringe and New Age media," Peiser said. "Today, it almost looks as if large sections of the mainstream media have become the new outlets for sensationalist pseudo-science." Many Thanks Kostas I. Replicating a fiction (bogusity)
|
Editor's Introduction -- The writers of many biology books like to tell about Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck, but their Lamarck is an invention. He has acquired his characteristics from hearsay and wrong guesses, and he has been replicated in successive generations of schoolbooks by successive teams of plagiarists.
|
from The Textbook Letter, September-October 1994 The Imaginary Lamarck:
A Look at Bogus "History" in Schoolbooks and also in some biological conference Michael T. Ghiselin (bogusity) Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck (1744-1829) takes a prominent place in many biology textbooks and life-science textbooks, which depict him as the author of a "theory" of evolution based upon the inheritance of acquired characteristics.
Textbooks typically introduce Lamarck with a flourish, as in this passage from Prentice Hall's Biology: The Study of Life:
One of the first theories of evolution was presented by the French biologist Jean Baptiste de Lamarck in 1809.
Much the same material appears in Holt's Biology Today: (you will see also some conference on the web)
In 1809 a French biologist named Jean Baptiste de Lamarck presented an explanation of the origin of species in his work Zoological Philosophy. Lamarck developed a theory of evolution based on his belief in two biological processes:
- The use and disuse of organs.
They also fail to tell that Lamarck's notion about giraffes, like all his evolutionary speculations, involved the mystical principle of progress toward "perfection."
All of these misrepresentations of Lamarck form part of a bigger folly: Textbooks pit Lamarck against Darwin in a mythical contest from which Darwin emerges victorious.
(This idea did not originate with Darwin; similar concepts had been published before.)
The tale told in most schoolbooks is all the more misleading because it isolates Darwin from Lamarck, as if there were no historical or intellectual connection between them. That too is false. Darwin was thoroughly familiar with Lamarck's views and writings, and Darwin explicitly acknowledged them when he composed an outline of the development of ideas about evolution. The outline was added to the third edition of On the Origin of Species (published in 1861) and was titled "An Historical Sketch of the Progress of Opinion on the Origin of Species." Here is what it said of Lamarck:
Lamarck was the first man whose conclusions [concerning the origin of species] excited much attention.
Tails of Mice, Ears of Dogs More confusion is sown when schoolbooks purport to explain why the mythical contest between Lamarck and Darwin was decided in Darwin's favor.
Here is how it is described in the high-school book Addison-Wesley Biology, under the headline "Lamarck Disproven":
In 1889, German biologist August Weismann showed that Lamarck's [explanation of evolution] was incorrect.
Heath's Biological Science: A Molecular Approach, for example, shows pictures of an adult Doberman pinscher and a Doberman pup, with this caption:
Acquired characteristics are not inherited as Lamarck thought.
The caption says:
The ears of this adult Doberman pinscher have been clipped so that they stand up on her head.
Factions and Fantasies Textbooks perpetuate all these follies so that they can perpetuate a bogus dichotomy between Lamarck's views and Darwin's.
One faction comprised people who favored natural selection as the chief mechanism of evolution, and who rejected the inheritance of acquired characteristics; these people came to be called "Neo-Darwinians." The other group advocated a wide variety of evolutionary mechanisms (known or unknown), and they also accepted the premise that acquired traits could pass from one generation to the next; these people were called "Neo-Lamarckians."
The controversy between the two groups endured for several decades, but by 1940 biologists had learned so much about genetics and related subjects that the ideas of the "Neo-Lamarckians" were generally abandoned.
For example, Addison-Wesley Biology says this:
While studying fossils of extinct invertebrates, Lamarck found some that looked like primitive forms of modern animals.

In the WSEAS Conferences, the accepted papers of a Special Session are published in: (1) Books (All these Books participate in ISI, IEE, ELSEVIER, SCOPUS etc...)
and your publication is considered as publication in an ISI Book) (2) CD-ROM Proceedings (3) Web Publishing: www.wseas.org/online (4) Extended versions in a Journal (participate in the most important
citation indices www.worldses.org/indexes/)
Special Session organizers participate FREE in the conference,
if the organizing committee receives 5 fully registered papers.
as well as, as they considered as Associate Editors in the Proceedings. More Details: [www.worldses.org] Please upload your Special Session via: [www.wseas.org]
SUGGESTIONS: you can organise a Special Session in the HARVARD UNiversity: [math08.wseas.org] and/or MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) [acc2008.wseas.org] or CSCC multiconference (>1000 papers every year)
12th WSEAS CSCC Multiconference. Heraklion, Crete Island, Greece, July 22-25, 2008

INDEXING
WSEAS has already ensured the inclusion of all the volumes of the Proceedings in all the collaborating WSEAS Citation Indices, like ISI, INSPEC (IEE), Engineering Information (EI), SCOPUS, Elsevier and the various Elsevier Bibliographic Databases, CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts), ZENTRALBLATT, ULRICH, MATHSCINET of AMS (American Mathematical Society), MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS of AMS (American Mathematical Society), DPP (Directory of Published Proceedings), Computer Science Bibliography Administrator, American Chemical Society, DEST, EBSCO etc.... [www.worldses.org]
For example, the IEE (now it is called IET) has in its citation index (INSPEC) more than 7000 papers from WSEAS, only for the last 3 years.
Visit, now: [www.worldses.org]
UNIVERSITIES WHERE THE WSEAS ORGANIZES CONFERENCES:
See www.wseas.org
REJECTION RATES IN CONFERENCES:
TYPICAL EXAMPLE: The WSEAS Conference in the University of Cambridge (February 2008) has already received more than 800 papers. From these papers, after a strict review we have selected 377 for the publication.
RATES OF REJECTION IN JOURNALS:
You can find the reviewers that WSEAS uses at the page
[www.worldses.org]
The POSITIVE OPINION OF 3 INDEPENDENT REFVIEWERS is necessary.
Example:
[tinyurl.com] or via the official web page of WSEAS.
OTHER FEATURES
1) A very strong and important feature is that the WSEAS will give to the partipants a new username and password WITHOUT EXPIRY DATE for on-line access in the WSEAS Conference proceedings FOR EVER.
2) Several University Faculty Members and Senior Researchers that will be with us in the Conference create groups and committees for the other WSEAS events
3) Rich cultural and social part as usual.
The importance of these conferences can be also proved by the impact
of these conferences in 2007 and 2008: See, please
[www.wseas.org]
4) The conference Books and Conference CD-ROM published by WSEAS Press continue to sell for a long time after the meeting has taken place. This is another demonstration of the prestige the scientific community attribute to the meetings organised by the WSEAS
PUBLICITY:
In the WSEAS Conferences the accepted papers are published
(1) Books (All these books participate in ISI, IEE, ELSEVIER, SCOPUS etc..., see the list in above) with ISBN and ISSN
[www.worldses.org]
(2) CD-ROM Proceedings with page numbering as the books with ISBN and ISSN
(3) E-Library (Web Publishing): [www.wseas.org]
with Free Access for many collaborating Universities (some of them
are among the 50 first universities on the world) and Free access
to all the WSEAS members and friends
****(4) Extended versions of accepted papers after further additional strict review can be published in a WSEAS Journals
(The WSEAS Journals participate in the most important citation indices [www.worldses.org] like Elsevier, Scopus, EI, Compendex, INSPEC, CSA .... see: www.worldses.org/indexes )

After the very successful WSEAS Conferences of December 2007 in
Cairo, Egypt, I was really impressed.the congress was marvelous and superb.
The Chairman and the Secretariat are very kind and helpful, and the other
scientists are willing to share their experience and assist each other.
the Conference Center is good. the Hotels are good and the place is good.
