Urges Dermitzogiannis, the popular bard of sitia, expressing his admiration for the folk museum of the town in rhyme.The museum, in kapetan Sifi Street near the square, is indeed well worth a visit. Established in 1975 by the ‘’Vitsentzos Kornaros’’ progressive society of sitia, which still runs it, the museum is constantly enriched by valuable donations from people living in the district of sitia.Visitors can admire wonderful woven handicrafts produced by the loom and female sill, and see many everyday items used in doth village and town houses.There are also agricultural implements such as a wooden plough, sickles for harvesting and a threshing - sledge. The display also comprises sieves of various size for different purposes, baskets large and small, and a great deal of pottery, even including large Minoan – type pit hoi for storing wine and olive oil.These are all authentic items, providing a representative picture of local traditional life and activities.These were mostly farming in nature, reflecting the inhabitants main occupations of olive cultivation and viticulture.
